James 4:14 – Dust in the Wind (June 12)

Hello and thanks for joining in on to today’s daily devotion. Today is Sunday. June 12th. The 1st day of the Hebraic week.

Our verse today is James 4:14.

14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Well, nothing like having a little perspective dropped your way to tell you that your life is in essence just drop of water in and endless ocean. A spec of dust in the wind when compared to the scope of time.

So what’s the goal with this verse that James is giving us? What’s he trying to say? Let’s look at the surrounding verses.

James 4:13
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.

This is all about reminding us of who is really in charge. And it’s not us. Oh, we may make our plans, but we need to keep our boasting at a minimum remembering that things will only happen if YHWH wills it to be. May we always remind ourselves that in the scope of eternity, we are just dust in the wind.

Let this be a focus in your time of meditation throughout the day. Until tomorrow, shalom!
